Friends, I have been through a couple of extensive weather blackouts in my life and I can tell you there is nothing fun about them.
If you aren’t prepared for the moment where you power goes out, and it WILL go out at one point or another, there are so many things that can go wrong.
The seeds for me preparing for a long term power outage came one winter when I was twelve or thirteen.
The small Michigan town I grew up in experienced a winter storm that kept us without power for about two days. It was cold enough for everything in the fridge and freezer to be sat outside so we were fine there.
For two days my mom and dad cooked everything on the wood stove that we used for heat. If it could be boiled or fried, we were kinda fine.
It’s then that I realized how screwed we would have been without the wood stove.
When my wife and I moved to Florida, we ended up buying a couple of solar generators because we did not want to fall into a situation where we couldn’t live as normally as possible in the event of a lengthy power outage.
All in all, we have emergency power to get by for a good while. It’s about time that you start doing the same if you haven’t already begun to do so.
The NOAA has issued a warning that a solar event is on the way that could lead to massive disruptions in every level of radio communication as well as blackouts and other power events.
Now, they are saying that this could only last for an hour, but truth be told I don’t think they really know.
All they are doing is providing their best possible guess. So what you need to do is get yourself as prepared as you possibly can.
Now, what does that mean? I’m not saying that you have to go out and cover your entire roof in solar panels and start hoarding gasoline.
What you need to do is sit down and take an honest assessment of what you would need to run you house at least semi normally.
As someone who has been without power for days on end following a hurricane can tell you, you would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
