Everyone seems to think that emergency services personnel have only a handful of types of calls or situations that they respond to.
Granted, there are certain situations that don’t exactly happen every day, but these men and women who are in this field have to be ready for every single situation. Cat up a tree? They’re ready for that.
Someone get themselves caught in a giant bank vault? Yeah, they have to train for anything and everything.
Depending on where you live if you are an EMS professional, chances are you get additional training based on your environment. Growing up in Michigan the way that I did, I know for a fact that there were some EMS departments that got additional training in treating frostbite and the like due to their location.
It always helps to know as much as possible when it comes to lifesaving techniques, or getting someone out of a jam in particular.
Just take a look at the jaws of life for example. How many lives have been saved due to all of the EMS folks trained in their use?
All that said, what I am about to tell you about makes opening a twisted car door look like walking and chewing gum at the same time.
Recently there was a semi truck driver who got involved in an accident with two other vehicles on the George Rogers Bridge that goes over the Ohio River.
I have been through that area a time or two and I can tell you the prospect of being in an accident on any bridge scares the heck out of me.
As if a three-vehicle accident isn’t dangerous enough, by the time the semi came to a stop the cab was partially detached and hanging over the bridge.
I can only imagine the fear and terror that the driver must have been thinking. It has got to be one of those things that you wouldn’t wish on anyone.
For the EMS folks that arrived on the scene, quick thinking and training immediately kicked in. It took them about forty minutes, but they managed to rig up a rope system and lowered someone down to rescue the female driver to a safety harness and bring her to safety.
The city held their breath as the @loukyfire made a daring rescue for a semi truck driver off the 2nd Street Bridge.
Tonight, I created a special open to @WHAS11 News at 6 showing what those moments felt like. pic.twitter.com/iaNDGSiT5Y

Here’s the amazing thing, the woman was unharmed. I mean, like not a scratch on her. Based on the serious nature of the accident they compelled her to go to a hospital as a precaution; but from the sounds of it all she would have needed to keep driving is a truck that wasn’t hanging off the side of a bridge.
This just goes to show you the amazing things that EMS professionals can do. It’s absolutely astounding to watch that video and see that person lower themselves down on a rope like it is something they do every day. Truly astounding.
